I’m incredibly lucky to get to associate with some of the most talented women in the Kids’ Sewing World. Andrea from GoTo Patterns, Kate from See Kate Sew Patterns, Shauna of Shwin Designs, and Melissa of Blank Slate Patterns have joined forces to produce an amazing pattern shop, Pattern Anthology. Their debut line, Sun and Surf was released just yesterday, and is kind of completely amazing.
Awesome girl stuff, awesome boy stuff. Just awesome. One of the best things with the collection is that you get four different designers. I may be a bit of a kid-clothes-sewing nerd, but I could totally name each designer for each piece without looking. All the collaborators have such awesome style and aesthetic, but work together so nicely. Seriously. I adore this collection so very much. I wish I had been asked to sew up each piece (hint, hint, ladies!) but what I do get to show you today is probably one of the coolest, on-trend yet unique kids’ pattern I’ve seen in a long time.
Blank Slate Pattern’s Coastal Cargos You want to sew your boy cool stuff? Stuff both of you can be excited about? Coastal Cargos are that stuff. Sure, at first glance these may appear to be just another good-looking pant with a real zipper and fly, button loops, and hip pockets. Now let’s look at all the additional details.
There are welt pockets on the bum. I made these pants a few weeks ago and this kid has been wearing them as often as he possibly can since. I may have dug them out of the dirty clothes hamper for the photo shoot. shhhh. So my pocket welts are wrinkly in the pictures, but thanks to the awesome, detailed instructions in the pattern, in real life they are smooth and perfect. I wanted to show them off, wrinkly as they are, because I love the contrasting fabric at the pockets. The combination of olive with khaki totally gives the pants a paramilitary feel to me, and I’m really digging it. The bias tape and all the other little details allow for really fun fabric play and customizing with this pattern.
The side cargo pockets have great box-pleat detailing, with a flap to keep treasures safe. I did screw up on the cargo pockets. I placed mine a little too low because I wasn’t thinking. The pattern directs them to be a couple inches higher, giving you more leg to show when rolled. Oh, yeah! the Coastal Cargos aren’t just pants! They roll up and secure with a cute, yet functional little button tab. Super cool, and super practical. It was freezing when we took these pictures, and I didn’t want to roll up both legs on my shivering boy. You can see the goose bumps on his calf as it is. But. I had to show off the awesome rolled cuff with finished seams and contrasting button tab. If you look closely, you’ll notice no unfinished seams on that rolled section. Blank Slate’s instructions explain how to finish the pants so that rolled or not, there are no unfinished edges on the legs inside or out. The technique definitely takes the pattern to the Intermediate level of sewing, and requires a steady hand and some patience. But totally doable. And honestly, when you finish, it’s kind of awesome to have such a cool, unique look. And, AND! the byproduct of all that finishing and bias tape is some seriously reinforced seams. Reinforced seams mean that not only are the Coastal Cargos super cool and awesomely convertible, they are also kid-tested durable.
We do a lot of camping and hiking in our family. I made my seven year old’s Coastal Cargos out of lightweight cotton ripstop (with contrasting cotton brushed twill) to hold up to anything my kid wants to tackle. These pants are perfect for outdoor adventure.
My son has been putting his Coastal Cargos to the test, and they’re holding up to some pretty rough play while looking completely awesome.
The next two weeks, the Sun & Surf line is available as a special purchase. You can get the whole incredible collection, just the boys’, or just the girls’ at discounted prices at Pattern Anthology. And the entire Sun & Surf collection will be touring the blogosphere during that time, too.
