I started trying to do type out a travel-log type post for Fabric Weekend 2013. But there’s just too much. What I most want to express and document is how incredible the women are that I was able to spend 3 days with, and how much fun it is to gorge myself on fabrics from amazing shops. If I could sum up the experience in one photo it would be this:
We started our Tour de Fabric at FIDM, a fashion and design school in LA. We got a tour of the campus and a super amazing demonstration from one of the textile design instructors. It was really cool to start the day with so much design inspiration, and then jump straight into the real reason we were all there: FABRIC SHOPPING!
We headed to the garment district and Michael Levine.
Michael Levine was amazing, and not just because they offer fabric by the pound in their “The LOFT” remnant store (though, really, that was pretty crazy cool! BY THE POUND!!) Our gracious hostess, Regina and owner, Larry had a whole afternoon planned out for us. We had lunch, toured the 70,000 square foot (!) warehouse, and shopped shopped shopped.

I was just super impressed with what all they did for us, and their enthusiasm for their company and fabric. Regina kept laughing at Larry, as he animatedly showed us rows and rows of bolts and bolts of fabric. She told us to start using the hashtag #larrylovesfabric, because, well, Larry loves fabric. It was so fun to see a business owner that honestly enjoys his product. It was really like he was just so happy to be able to share his passion with a group of people who “got it”.
Or most of it. I actually had a few other stragglers that I missed in this photo.
Here’s a little sneak peek of what I’ve already sewn up with some of my Michael Levine purchase.
More on that next week.
After Michael Levine, we spread out into the garment district at large.
What an experience that was! Blocks and blocks of shops of all sizes full of fabrics of all types. It was crazy! Anything you can think of, and more, can be found in the LA garment district. At the end of the day, I walked away with some really fun and super inexpensive ($1.50/yard!!) fabrics, and tons of notions and accessories for my machine. I picked up a rolling foot for $5 that I’m seriously giddy over! And that rainbow elastic!?! So much fun!
That night, exhuasted and giddy from our shopping, we all stayed up late laughing and talking in the hotel lounge. My roommates and I didn’t even get to bed until after 2:00 a.m. I roomed with Stef from Girl.Inspired, Abby from Sew Much Ado, Caila from Caila Made, and Cheri from You and Mei. I know! Seriously. So much fun!
The next day, bright and early, back out for more shopping! We first hit Mood. Yes, MOOD!

I picked up some awesome leather there. And then a few went back to the garment district, while some others of us went to an off-the-path store called SAS that Bev and Andrea recommended to us. It was crazy there! Tons and tons of fabrics, notions, and trims. Some of it awesome, a lot of it not so much. You had to dig (literally) through piles and piles of odds and ends, but there were treasures to be had. Like 40 yards of striped piping for $4.50!
The shopping was a ton of fun. But the most fun was just hanging out with a group of women that share so much in common, and have so much fun together. I mean, where else would you have 20+ women standing in a circle, showing off all the things they are wearing that they also happened to have made/designed themselves!? I love these pictures Jessica took of Mie from Sewing Like Mad. You can see Melissa from Melly Sews also laughing in the background. The whole weekend was full of moments like this.
I have to give a huge shout-out to Andrea from The Train to Crazy and Bev from Flamingo Toes for all the work that went into putting this thing together. And for being such amazing tour guides. I can’t thank them enough. They did so much. THANK YOU!
Jess is amazing. AMAZING! It was an incredible finale to the weekend. All of us got back together for dinner and laughing. The food was incredible, the company even more so.
So thank you to Jess and Jo-Ann. In all our shopping in LA, and as much fun as it is, I am so grateful for what Jo-Ann Stores does for the home sewist. I live in a small town, in the middle of Utah. There is no way I’d be able to sew as much, or what I do, without my local Jo-Ann.
And that was Fabric Weekend 2013! I feel so incredibly privilaged to have been able to experience FW2013, and to have been able to get to know these women better. The creative-blogging world is full of amazing people. I’m so happy to be a part of it!
