I am beyond flattered and excited to get to participate in The Cottage Mama’s Sewing Pattern Blog Tour.
Lindsay at The Cottage Home has just released her newest line of patterns for girls. All incredibly sweet in design and thoughtful in detail, Lindsay has an amazing talent for creating patterns that highlight your favorite fabrics. If you are a designer-fabric junky, with an itch to sew for little people in your life, The Cottage Mama patterns are the way to go! All of her patterns lend themselves to mixing and matching of various fabrics through the wide range of options and details she includes. Lindsay’s eye for detail is amazing! Little things like split cuffs and ruffled peter-pan collars are what set her patterns apart.
I was lucky enough to get to sew up both the Daphne Wrap Dress and Top and the Skip and Play Pants and Capris. And for extra wearabiltiy, I followed the pattern’s suggestion of making my Daphne Top reversible.
Both patterns were very well written, with the downloadable/printable pieces coming together without any issues. Because I went the more simple route with both pieces, I was able to complete things in just a couple of hours.
The Skip and Play Pants and Capris pattern has a variety of options, including multiple cuff ideas and ruffles or no ruffles at both the waist and cuffs. Though I appreciate a good ruffle, I decided to keep things clean and simple for my Skip and Play pants. I love the flat front, with the elastic in the back for a better fit. I went with the split cuff option in the pattern, then added some piping to bring more of the blue floral fabric into the mix.
The fit is fabulous. I made an 18 month for Ivy, based on her measurements, and I couldn’t be happier with they way they fit her. I know many of you do cloth diapers, like we do. I had no issues with Ivy’s cloth in the pants, though we do use pretty trim diapers. I also love the length: long enough to grow with her a bit, but not so long they drown her. Perfect. And with the decorative cuff, I can see these sticking around in Ivy’s wardrobe as capris when she does get taller.
Now the Daphne Top. I’ve been in love with the look of cross-back pinafore-type tops for girls for years, since long before I had a daughter. The Daphne Dress and Top, like the Skip and Play Pants, includes options for all kinds of details. First, obviously, is the choice between dress or top. I went with top. Then there are ruffles, piping, pockets, and more! I love having options, as I feel like it gives practicality and longevity to a pattern. Like the pants, I wanted to keep things simple for Ivy’s Daphne Top. I skipped most of the optional details, and went with just the reversible suggestion listed in the pattern. So there is this fun blue floral on one side And then a red graphic stripe on the other. Both fabrics are from Jo-Ann, as is the chambray I used in the pants.
I really can’t decide which I like best, so it’s a good thing it’s reversible!
Both the Daphne Dress and Top and the Skip and Play Pants and Capris, as well as The Cottage Mama’s other patterns are available in PDF and Paper. So if you’re an instant gratification, buy-it-print-it-sew-it type, you’re in the game. Or if you prefer to save your toner and like things in nice little packages shipped right to your door, the paper patterns have you covered. The paper patterns also come in full-color booklets and look amazing. All the patterns, PDF and paper, can be purchased directly from The Cottage Mama shop here: www.thecottagemama.com Lindsay also has a new book coming out, Sew Classic Clothes for Girls: 20 Dresses, Outfits, and Accessories from The Cottage Mama that will be available October 7. I’ve seen sneak peeks and it looks incredible! Preorders for the book will start next month.
