This week you need to sew something for yourself. It’s time. To make it even more officially time, Imagine Gnats is hosting a pretty amazing event dedicated to the Selfish Sew and you can read more about it HERE The rules are pretty simple: sew something, anything for yourself and share it. The sharing medium of choice is Kollabora. My pattern of choice for the week is Kitschy Coo’s Penny Pinafore. The Penny Pinafore has a nice size range, for teens and women. I really love the seams on this one. Very flattering, and make for some good opportunity for playing with fabric patterns.
I did my Penny as a top. The pattern has instructions for a dress or tunic. The fabric I used was pretty horrible. Cute, but horrible. It was $1/yard somewhere in the LA Garment District. I loved the wide stripe, and thought I could make it work. It’s super thin, but that’s not the part that makes it horrible. The stripes aren’t printed on the grain, they are printed at a slight angle, that becomes more dramatic the more fabric you use. As I was cutting things out, it became pretty obvious that whatever I made out of this fabric wasn’t going to lay right, and the longer I made my Penny, the more oddly it would fit. So, I went with a short top. And as much as I dislike the fabric, I really like the pattern and now I need a high quality wide stripe to due the Penny justice.
I love the bound neckline and sleeves. And again, the super flattering seams that run down the body of the Penny on the front and back. And like all of Kitschy Coo’s patterns, the Penny Pinafore sews up quick and easy with fabulous, clear instructions, and with amazing fit. Amanda, the designer, knows knits forwards and backwards, and it shows in her designs. I love her patterns.
