Ready for some cuteness? You need to check out the Soleil Dress from Selvage Designs. It’s pretty much the cutest thing ever.
A simple, sleeveless knit dress with or without pockets, but with great fit and perfect summer-time length.
Ready for the sweetest detail of all?
This little opening in the back just makes the dress. A solid back pattern piece is included, but I just love this bound opening.
The fabric is Woodland Party by Lillestoff. I bought it from Kitschy Coo and it is just so perfect for this dress. I was able to get the dress out of just one half meter and now I want to go back and buy .5 meter of every single print in her shop to make more Soleils! I ran into trouble finding binding I liked for the dress. Kitschy Coo carries a great lime, but I didn’t think to order it until it was too late. But then I *had* to have lime binding. I finally found a lime knit at Jo-Ann. But it wasn’t ribbing, it’s a kind of funky “specialty” knit, whatever that means. Perfect color, though, so I went with it.
Because I used a funky knit for the binding, it didn’t have much stretch. Of course, I made the dress while Ivy slept and just kept hoping that maybe, just maybe, Ivy’s head would somehow fit through the neck opening. It did not. At all. Ugh. So, I went back and cut the dress at one shoulder, and extended each side of the one shoulder, front and back, making tabs. Then I bound them with some more [non-stretchy] binding, and added snaps.
The pattern came together easily with good instructions. The only thing that may be an issue is that there aren’t specific cutting lengths for the binding. The instructions do give the width, and then you just need to cut a bunch of binding at that width, and go with it. If you are new to sewing knit binding, make sure to follow the instructions of slightly stretching while attaching, so that you end up with the right amount. Not too big of a deal, but something to be aware of before going in.
I just love knit dresses on Ivy. And with the adorable back details, and just cute fit, the Soleil is definately in the running for my favorite girl pattern. Seriously. So cute.
