Want to see my new favorite-wear-it-all-the-time outfit?
The Staple Dress is such an easy sew, two main pieces, dolman sleeves. Badda boom badda bing! A Dress. But there are some details that make it special. Like binding at the neckline and sleeve openings to give it a professional inside finish. Oh, and pockets!
Love a dress with pockets. There are also two hem options: straight or a high-low hem. I went with the high-low.
When I first was making the dress, I was worried. The instructions say that it will look like a hospital gown before you add shirring, but it really did. I was super skeptical how a little bit of shirring was going to take the bag-shaped dress I had and make it into something I wanted to wear in public. But I had faith, and added the shirring, and suddenly, it came together! Like magic.
I did five rows of shirring, because I wanted things a bit more fitted. I think it looks fabulous. I’ve worn this dress with and without a belt, and it looks great either way. But my son took these photos, and we only ended up with one belt-less shot that wasn’t completely out of focus.
The fabric is from Michael Levine, but I don’t know a designer. It’s a stretch cotton blend of some sort. Mie from Sewing Like Mad and I both bought some of it last year in LA. I love the bright geometric designs. I used up pretty much every bit of the fabric on this dress, having less of it on hand than the pattern recommends. Really, like, every last bit of it. I shared this on my Instagram when I was cutting out. I was able to get the bindings out of the tiny bits left over at the top and bottm, but had to cut pockets from other fabric.
I got super lucky with the centering of the lines up front, so I don’t mind at all that the design isn’t centered in the back. Still love it.
