I have a new favorite dress. It’s my Inky Kitty Marigold.
The fabric is another MyFabricDesigns.com treasure, Inky Kitty designed by girllikethesea. I’ve had so much fun the past few months trying out the various substrates available at MyFabricDesigns.com. For this dress, I went with Faux Linen Slub Sheer. It has a fantastic texture, with a beautiful weave.
It hangs a tiny bit more stiff. I almost hesitate to use the word “stiff”, because it’s not a stiff fabric. But it does have some structure to it. I love how it works with the Marigold pattern. The skirt flares out just a bit due to the structure of the fabric, but still hangs flowey and nice. I really, really love it. The fabric is sheer, though, as the name indicates.
To work with the sheer fabric and make it more wearable for me, I added underlining to each and every pattern piece. The difference, as I understand it, between lining and underlining, is that lining hangs free from the outer shell of the garment. You make a lining separate than the outer/main, then combine. With an underlining, you sew the lining pieces with each of the outer pieces, forming the garment as you sew. Does that make any sense?
So basically, each and every pattern pieces is sandwiched with a lining piece, and it’s all sewn together at once as one pattern piece.
The only place I didn’t add the lining (a poly lining fabric found at Jo-Ann) was at the back yoke. The Marigold dress uses a doubled yoke anyway, so I didn’t feel the need to add any more fabric there.
For hemming, I cute the skirt lining pieces about an inch shorter than the main fabric, so that when folded up twice and hemmed, things weren’t too bulky. I also still wear a slip with the dress, as my mother taught me 😉
I adore this dress. I love the whimsy of the fabric. It’s fun without being juvenile. As for the pattern, this is my third Marigold and it’s safe to say it’s one of my all time favorite patterns to sew and wear for myself. You can see my other Marigold dress HERE and my Marigold top HERE.
So combine one of my favorite women’s patterns with a great print, and you get a favorite dress. Life is good.
