My middle boy has a strong and long-lasting love for food-themed clothing (remember the pizza jacket?). For his birthday this past year, I surprised him with a hotdog-pocketed sweatshirt.
His birthday was in February, so I’m only about seven months late on this post. But in those seven months, this sweatshirt has seen more wear than most anything else in his closet. It’s also one of my favorite things he owns. It’s just so him.
I used the “Rose Grey” Sweatshirt pattern from Ottobre 4/2015 (pattern #30), with a few masculine alterations. The pattern is for a more cropped, high-low hemmed sweatshirt. I lengthened and straightened the body of the sweatshirt, and then added a little triangle thing at the top center front. I’m sure that little triangle thing has a more official title, but I have no idea what it would be.
I also had a lot of fun with my new-at-the-time coverstitch machine on this one. Variegated orange thread contrasts throughout the sweatshirt, front and back.
I used French terry for body of the sweatshirt, and this funky denim knit for the arms, collar and hem. The denim knit is thicker than regular knit, with a similar weight to the French terry, so they pair well. It’s also super cool with orange threading through the weft of the fabric. So it looks dark denim except when you’re upclose and the fabric is stretched; then the orange peeks through. I used a denim/green of the same fabric with my Hudson Pants HERE. It’s just fun and unexpected.
And then, of course, the hotdog knit on the pocket. It’s called Bombastic Hotdog and I received it as a free swatch from Spoonflower during a promotion they had. It’s held up quite nicely in the wash, with just a little fading over the past months. It really makes the sweatshirt unique, and good enough to eat. Apparently.
A fun sweatshirt for a fun kid. This is the type of thing that I absolutely love about sewing. I can make unique, high quality clothing for my kids that represents their unique personalities.
