I really love Hudson Pants. I really love floral. Combine the two? It’s just a lotta love.
I had been wanting a floral pair of Hudson pants for a very long time, ever since Delia Creates made a pair back in summer ’15. Hudson Pants, if you are not aware, are basically the Most Comfortable Pants on Earth®. I have three other pair (grey, black, blue/green) that I would live in all day every day if there was no such thing as propriety or hygiene. They are a pretty easy, quick sew, especially as far as pants go.
For my floral pair, I grabbed some organic cotton jacquard from My Fabric Designs in this Neon Summer Floral. I wanted the print big, so increased it as far as it would go. I think they would be equally fabulous in a smaller print. One thing I would change, I plan to go a size smaller when cutting the pattern next time. The jacquard has a more loose, stretchy drape, and I think would look better just a bit more fitted in the sizing with the Hudsons. Still, I love these things.
I whipped these Hudsons up this past September. It’s now February. I have worn these pants for going on 6 months, at least weekly. At least. Sometimes multiple days in a row. It happens. They have been washed and dried many, many times. So let’s talk about the fabric and how it’s holding up.
I used the organic cotton jacquard on pants for my youngest son, and there was more fading that I would have liked. My Fabric Designs assured me that it was not representative of their product, and that they would look into it and fix things. I wanted to be sure the fix had fixed things, so I cut a swatch off the new jacquard yardage before I ever even prewashed the fabric, so that I could better gauge how things held up. Here is the original, untouched swatch placed on my pants, after 6 months of heavy use and wash.
I wash and dry on hot settings, along with all of my clothing. There is very little in the way of laundry that I make allowances or special treatment for. I need fabrics that can handle being washed and dried, and worn and just generally abused. This stuff has held up quite well. The little bit of fading there is, is only noticeable when placed with the original swatch. These pants are still bright, vivid and look great.
The organic cotton jacquard has been the only fabric from My Fabric Designs I ever had any fading issues with. Now that they have fixed the fading on that textile, I genuinely feel I can highly recommend all of their substrates. Also of note here, My Fabric Designs has improved their printing even since I ordered this floral, and their designs are even more vivid now. I’m just really impressed with this company and so happy to get to work with them.
