I have had plans for this dress for very nearly a year now. I was just waiting for my daughter to be big enough to fit the pattern. Happily enough, she is big enough just in time for me also wanting to make her a new Easter dress.
The fabric is from My Fabric Designs.com, designed by GirlLiketheSea. She also designed the Inky Kitty print I used for my favorite dress of mine, HERE. This fabric is called Asher Lion and features a lot of big, yelling cats. Pretty perfect for my feisty, vocal 5 year old.
The pattern is Ottobre Design, issue 3/2016 pattern #36. I received this issue of Ottobre right about the same time as I ordered the Asher Lion fabric, and I just couldn’t separate the two in my mind. But, as mentioned earlier, I had to wait until Ivy grew into the pattern’s size range. The sizing starts at 110, which is still a bit bigger than my daughter wears. But I figured it was close enough, and this way she can wear it through the summer, too.
My two favorite parts of the dress are the back and the underskirt.
The back features a sweet bow at each shoulder strap. I just love how delicate and feminine it is.
The underskirt is made of tulle and hemmed in ribbon. Again, very feminine. And it adds a perfect amount of volume to the dress, which is made of a simple cotton voile.
However, the tulle is a bit of a problem. Ivy says it is itchy. She pouted for over an hour on Easter Sunday, after I bribed her to wear the dress without a tantrum. She did eventually tell me it was no longer itchy. She even volunteered to do the photo shoot without my prompting when I told her I wanted to get some pictures of it. It helped that “her” tulips are in bloom in “her” garden, and she was adamant we do the shoot in our front yard with the flowers. But I would like to add something to the seam where the tulle meets the rest of the lining, as she said that is where the “itchiness” was. I’m thinking maybe a jersey knit encasing the seam allowance? I don’t know, but I need to solve this issue because I really want Ivy to love this dress as much as I do.
Without me bribing her to wear it.
